Orthodontics
Does your child need braces (orthodontic treatment)? The costs of orthodontics can add up.
There are several ways to limit the costs of orthodontics. You receive reimbursement through health insurance and, as a CM member, also through CM Benefit . Furthermore, with the CM Dental Plan dental insurance, you protect yourself against high dental care costs.
Health insurance
In Belgium, health insurance is compulsory. Everyone who contributes to it can benefit from it.
CM benefit
In addition to the mandatory health insurance, you receive extra benefits as a CM member.
Health insurance
Is your child younger than 9 years old and does he or she need braces (= early orthodontic treatment)? Then you can receive reimbursement from health insurance.
That refund is for the correction of:
- the frontal and lateral crossbites;
- the frontal and lateral forced bites;
- the position of the incisors as prevention of anterior trauma;
- the lack of space during the changeover phase.
The reimbursement consists of two fixed amounts (lump sums) of 430.11 euros (or 476.11 euros for patients with increased reimbursement ).
What should you do?
- Did your orthodontist provide you with a certificate of care provided? Submit it to CM immediately : the first lump sum must be certified before your child's 9th birthday. As of 01-07-2024, the second lump sum can also be certified after the 9th birthday. (Before 01-07-2024, the entire early orthodontic treatment had to be completed before the ninth birthday.)
- This amount is paid out twice : a first time at the beginning of the treatment, a second time at the end of the treatment.
- This reimbursement (for early orthodontic treatment) is a one-time payment . This means that you can only apply for it once.
What is the condition?
- From 01-07-2024: your child is younger than 9 years old at the time of the first flat rate.
- Before 01-07-2024: your child is younger than 9 years old for full early orthodontic treatment.
- Regular orthodontic treatment must not yet have been started (see 'for young people up to 22 years of age').
Up to the age of 22, health insurance covers the costs of orthodontics (classical or regular orthodontics). The amounts are fixed , regardless of the techniques and appliances used. In addition to the fee, maximum rates may also be certified since January 1, 2026, following informed consent from the patient. These maximum rates are not reimbursed by health insurance.
