How much does a dental prosthesis cost?

It can happen to anyone: an unfortunate fall from a bicycle, severe gum inflammation, or a tooth that can no longer be reconstructed after multiple treatments. The costs of replacing a tooth can run high, as not all types of dental prostheses are reimbursed.

Removable denture

This type of prosthesis is also called dentures and can be removed.

Variants

This is the standard removable prosthesis. A resin plate covers the palate or part of the lower jaw. Artificial teeth are then placed on top of this.

This can be a partial prosthesis, to replace a number of teeth, or a full denture that replaces all teeth.

A metal plate covered with gum-colored resin is used. The artificial teeth are placed on this. This type of dental prosthesis typically costs more because an additional fee is charged for the frame, and this fee is not reimbursed.

This is a partial or fully removable prosthesis that clicks onto natural teeth or implants. Unlike a plate prosthesis, not all teeth need to be extracted. The dentures are more securely fixed due to the click system, which increases wearing comfort. You can remove it yourself for cleaning.

This is generally the most expensive solution among removable dentures because an extra cost is charged for the click system.

Cost price

The cost depends on several factors : the number of teeth being replaced, the material used, and whether or not your dentist is contracted with the health insurance system. If your dentist uses techniques to keep the prosthesis better in place, such as a frame or a snap-on system, he or she may also charge extra. Snap-on dentures are often the most expensive option.

The average cost of a full denture (per upper or lower jaw) is 878 euros . 9% of CM members paid more than 1,200 euros for this. A plate denture costs less on average. A partial denture will generally be more expensive. Discuss the cost with your dentist in advance and ask for a detailed cost estimate.

Fixed denture

You cannot remove a fixed denture because it is attached to existing teeth or your jawbone. Below, we discuss the most common types.

Variants

When a single tooth is missing, an implant can be placed in the bone at this location. A crown can then be screwed or glued onto it. Implants can also be used to attach a snap-on denture (overdenture).

If the tooth root is still present and strong enough, an implant is not necessary. In that case, only a ceramic and/or metal cap is bonded to a prepared tooth.

A crown can be placed on an implant. This crown (ceramic cap) is then placed on a metal connector that is in turn attached to the implant.

A dental bridge is a non-removable structure used to replace one or more missing teeth, attached to surrounding teeth or implants.

Cost price

The effective cost is determined by, among other things, the chosen material (origin, sustainability…), any warranty period, additional care…

There are also procedures that do not (fully) replace a tooth or have only an aesthetic purpose. These procedures are usually not eligible for reimbursement.

Discuss the cost with your dentist in advance and ask for a detailed cost estimate.

The average cost of an implant treatment is 908 euros.

The average cost price of a crown is 708 euros.

The average cost of a crown treatment with an implant is 1,988 euros. This includes 908 euros as the average cost for an implant and 1,080 euros as the average cost for a crown treatment (crown + metal abutment).

The average cost of a three-tooth bridge is 1,855 euros. For a three-tooth bridge on two implants, you pay an average of 4,379 euros (2,563 euros for the bridge and 1,816 euros for the two implants).
