Social insurer
As a social insurer, CM administers compulsory health insurance in the most efficient, reliable, and proactive manner. In addition, through our supplementary and optional insurance policies, we are committed to insuring the health needs of our members in an affordable and high-quality way.
As a social insurer, CM is committed to the management and execution of the following tasks.
The federal health and disability insurance
The sickness and disability insurance is administered by:
- the health insurance funds (grouped into five national federations, including the National Federation of Christian Mutualities);
- the Sickness and Disability Insurance Fund ;
- a specific health insurance fund for NMBS personnel .
They reimburse medical expenses and pay compensation in the event of incapacity for work .
Organization and management
The management and organization of health and disability insurance is carried out by the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (Riziv) .
It receives contributions for sickness and disability insurance—from the National Social Security Office and the social insurance funds for the self-employed, among others—and distributes them to the national unions, the Auxiliary Fund, and the NMBS health insurance fund.
In addition, the RIZIV is responsible, among other things, for supervising these bodies.
For whom?
In Belgium, health and disability insurance is compulsory for everyone .
The system is based on the principle of solidarity . Everyone can benefit from it and contributes their share in proportion to their income.
The sickness and disability insurance applies to anyone who:
- is in good standing with a health insurance fund or the Mutual Aid Fund for Sickness and Disability Insurance;
- has paid the social security contribution and the financial responsibility contribution .
Role CM
- CM as co-administrator :
- holds a seat on various bodies of the National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance (Riziv);
- is actively involved in concluding tariff agreements with the healthcare providers;
- acts as a representative and spokesperson for the patients.
- CM as executor :
- checks your rights;
- reimburses medical expenses;
- pays compensation in the event of incapacity for work;
- provides preliminary guidance and gives advice.
Flemish Social Protection
CM is the administrator of Flemish social protection via the CM-Zorgkas . It consists of:
- the care budget for the severely dependent ;
- the care budget for elderly people with care needs ;
- the care budget for people with a disability ;
- a reimbursement for the rental or purchase of a mobility aid ;
- a reimbursement for care in a residential care centre, short-stay centre or day care centre .
To this end, the CM-Zorgkas does the following:
- checks your rights;
- ensures that you receive your rights automatically where possible;
- pays out the healthcare budgets;
- provides guidance and gives advice;
- makes reimbursements to providers of mobility aids or to the facility concerned.
The supplementary insurance: 'CM services and benefits'
In addition to mandatory health insurance, as a CM member you enjoy an extensive package of services and benefits once you have paid your CM contribution . This contribution is mandatory if you wish to join CM.
Additional optional insurance
You can take out additional insurance for extra services. You pay a separate contribution for this.
